The hydraulic crane project employs the principle that any force applied to an incompressible liquid or air will propagate through the liquid/air, without significant loss of strength, to effect whatever is on the other side. When pressure is applied, the air/oil is forced to transfer to the other part of the crane. This is turn redirects this force where it is needed to lift heavy objects.
Hydraulic energy comes in three main forms. Kinetic energy is caused by moving liquids; potential energy is caused by pressure, and heat energy, which is generated by resisting the flow of fluids.
Pascal’s Law states that the “Pressure applied to any part of a confined fluid transmits to every other part with no loss. The pressure acts with equal force on all equal areas of the confining walls and perpendicular to the walls. This is the basic principle for any hydraulic system.”
