To form a shadow a source of light is required. When something obstructs the light rays, and the light rays cannot pass through the object or go around the object, and a dark shadow appears. Transparent objects cannot form a shadow as the light passes through them, only opaque or translucent objects can form shadows. You can change the shape and size of the shadow by moving the object that is blocking the light or by moving the source of the light.
Some sources of light include the Sun, a light bulb, a flashlight, or a campfire. Things like trees, fences, buildings are great at blocking the light and making shadows.
A shadow is cast on the side of the object that is furthest from the light source. The proximity of the object creating the shadow to the light source determines the relative size of the shadow. As an object moves further from a light source, the shadow becomes smaller, and as an object moves closer, the shadow becomes larger.
